Grading System and Grading Scale
Download PDFA 73% (C) is required to pass a course and progress in the undergraduate academic programs. The final course grade is determined by the cumulative scores on all assigned coursework.
Learners who fail to successfully complete a course on the third attempt will not
be eligible to continue in the academic program and will be withdrawn from the College.
An attempt at the course is defined as continued enrollment in the course past the
add/drop (cancellation) period.
Failure to earn a score of 73% (C) or higher in an undergraduate course will prevent
learners from progressing to the next level or graduating from the academic program
and require the learners to repeat the course. Learners who fail to successfully complete
a course on the third attempt will not be eligible to continue in the academic program
and will be withdrawn from the College. An attempt at the course is defined as continued
enrollment in the course past the add/drop (cancellation) period. If the course is
a prerequisite for a higher-level course, the prerequisite must be completed before
progressing in the academic program.
An 80% (B-) grade is required to pass a course and progress in the graduate academic
programs. The cumulative scores on all assigned coursework determine the final course
grade.
Failure to earn a score of 80% (B-) or higher in a graduate-level course will prevent
learners from progressing to the next level or graduating from the academic program
and require the learners to repeat the course.
Final course percentages do not necessarily reflect
progression toward successfully meeting the required 3.0 cumulative GPA for program
completion.
Learners who do not successfully meet course requirements will receive updated course schedules. All schedule changes will align with Catalog policies according to the version in effect when the courses are retaken.
Practicum courses within the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program are assessed
using a Pass/Fail grading system.
To earn a “Pass,” learners must meet all course requirements, demonstrate satisfactory
performance in assigned competencies, and submit all required practicum documentation.
Pass/Fail grades do not impact the learner’s GPA.
If a learner does not complete all required practicum hours and/or documentation for
the semester, the Incomplete Policy will be applied, as outlined in the Catalog. Learners
who fail a site visit evaluation are not eligible for an Incomplete and will be required
to repeat the practicum course(s) and associated clinical hours. Failure may affect
academic progression and eligibility for graduation.

Note: Grading is based on rounded percentages as follows: decimals below .50 are rounded down to the full percentage point; decimals equal to or above .50 are rounded up to the full percentage point.
AU – Audit – is recorded when a learner takes a course for no academic credit. An AU status has no effect on grade point average (GPA) or rate of progress for purposes of calculating SAP.
I – Incomplete – An Incomplete may be granted when a learner cannot complete coursework by the end of a semester because of extenuating circumstances or experiential learning scheduling delays.
An Incomplete may be granted when:
- A learner requests an Incomplete* in extenuating circumstances. Examples include documented:
- Death of an immediate family member or close relative;
- Debilitating illness, medical condition, accident, or injury.
- A learner is delayed in the start or placement of the integrated practicum (IP), Direct Focused Care (DFC), or graduate practicum course hours.
- An instructor requests an Incomplete on behalf of a learner.
All work must be submitted by Friday at 4:59 p.m. Mountain Time of Week 14 in the following semester. If the required work is completed by this deadline, the instructor will assign the earned grade. Failure to meet the stated deadline will result in an “F” for the course.
Program plans may be adjusted to account for an Incomplete, and graduation may be delayed. Prerequisite requirements must be met before progressing in the program.
*Note: If a learner requests an Incomplete, the learner must complete the Incomplete Request Form (available in the LMS) and obtain instructor approval. Incomplete requests from learners are approved at the instructor’s discretion and are not guaranteed.
IR – Incomplete Remediation – An Incomplete Remediation (IR) may be granted when a learner is unable to complete skills remediation, HESI remediation, or other coursework by the end of the semester.
An IR may be requested by a learner* or an instructor.
All required coursework, skills remediation, or HESI remediation in IR status must be submitted by 4:59 p.m. Mountain Time on Wednesday of Week 2 in the following academic semester. If the work is completed by this deadline, the instructor will request that the IR be changed to the letter grade earned. Failure to complete the required work by the stated deadline will result in the IR being converted to an “F” grade, and the learner will be required to pay for and repeat the course.
*Note: To request an Incomplete Remediation, the learner must complete the Incomplete Remediation Request Form (available in the LMS) and obtain instructor approval. Incomplete Remediation requests from learners are approved at the instructor’s discretion and are not guaranteed.
TC – Transfer Credit – is recorded when the requested transfer credits have been approved. To receive credit, a learner must request an official transcript must be requested by the learner directly from the institution attended. Specific grades for courses transferred from another institution are not recorded. For more information see Transfer of Credit section of this Catalog.
W – Withdrawal – is recorded when a learner officially withdraws from a course after the end of the add/drop period but before 5 p.m MT on Friday of Week 8 in the academic semester. Withdrawals do not affect GPA. However, course credits will be considered as attempted but not completed for calculating the maximum time frame and course completion rate portions of SAP. If a learner withdraws from a course after 5 p.m MT on Friday of Week 8 of any academic semester, an “F” grade will be recorded in the course.
WF – Withdrawal/Fail – is recorded when learners are placed on disciplinary suspension during an academic semester in progress. The “WF” grade will affect the learner's GPA and SAP in the same manner as an “F” grade.
X – Cancel – is recorded when a new learner cancels their enrollment during the add/drop period. The “X” status has no effect on GPA or rate of progress for purposes of calculating SAP.
